I blame Tree 0% on this. Gave the most dollars and term, probably to our detriment, and he takes the blame for this?
Anyone who says we should have traded him a year before is so fantastically out of their mind on the fact they didnt care about our playoffs last season, or that what we got back made us a better team. This is all on Johnny, John, Gyppy or whatever u want to call him.

No one knew he was offering the most money until it was no longer relevant.

A lot of fans connected the dots a long time ago and saw JG as a likely flight risk. I think management became too enamored and didn't do what was best for the team in the long run. Maybe Johnny fooled them, but regardless, they were fools then. But hey, we got one last good regular season out of him, so hopefully it was worth it. Should have traded him after last season at the latest.
A team like Calgary just can't afford to go into the final year of a contract with their best players, with no extension agreement (or even ongoing discussions!). It is even worse when that player is American and has hinted in the past about leaving. So yeah, Treliving dropped the ball bad here. Small market teams have to manage their assets more proactively.
And I know we should all be mad at Columbus, but they are actually very similar. Smaller market team, not a great climate, no winning history, recently lost their best players to free agency. They have had to be proactive about trading players who are flight risks and focus a lot on homegrown players (I think something like 8 or 9 of their players are American, and like 4 of those are from the Columbus/Ohio area). Flames management has shown a lot of hubris in recent years and forgetting that they need to operate a little more conservatively in order to have success. Failing to foresee Johnny leaving is on them 100%.
