The most rational explanation that I've come to terms with is that he wanted the least amount of pressure, be in the east, and not be in Canada. Somewhere he can just go out in public and not get recognized constantly. I'm convinced he would have always left a market where he was being counted on as the star. Especially if it was Philly or Jersey. He's always struck me as a bit of a Phil Kessel type. Both in skill and personalty.
