People can do two things at once. I'd guess that most of these signings today are no more complicated than contacting the agent and saying, "this is what we're prepared to give your client. If you're open to it, let us know and we can finalize the paperwork."

In Poolman's case, he was an RFA, so you're not even negotiating against anyone else. He took less than his QO, so it likely has a decent raise for the AHL portion, and taking league minimum makes it easier to call him up.



This has become pretty standard for the opening day of free agency in recent years... A few big names sign right away, a bunch of mid/bottom-roster signings trickle in all day, and bubble AHLs grab the best offer available to make sure they don't get stuck without a contract. The highest profile players take time to listen to the pitches from different teams and weight their options, and those signings trickle in over the next few days.
