I don't blame Johnny one bit. I have been in the exact opposite situation, although the money wasn't on the same scale, it was still a very substantial amount.
Some people need to get a grip here.
I was offered a move/promotion that would have netted me a very substantial raise in the 6 figures, and I turned it down because I didn't want to be 2000 kms from my ageing folks, and I didn't want to move my wife away from her family. Plus my dad had a major heart surgery last year at 80 and I know, he values the time we get to spend together.... as there may not be much more.
You hit a certain point, where you are making a level of income, that even a very large increase does not become the determining factor. And when we are talking money that's in the 10's of millions? What's another 10 million, when you are already guaranteed 90 to be where you truly want to be?
Arguably, another 100k/yr or so to me, would have a far bigger impact than 10 million would have to a multimillionaire. But I love my parents far more than a bigger boat, and a fancier car.
It's the opposite, but still the same motivation.
People need to accept this, respect this, and be grateful for the years he gave us. He did what was right, and important to him. It's too bad peoples feelings are hurt, but in the end, we are talking about a childs game, played by men. To quote Seinfeld "We're cheering for clothes."
