On one hand its good to honour your family and consider them, but on the other Gross said it was a family decision, and at 29 you can't have mom influencing your decisions any more. He's an adult and has the ability to make his own decisions and it looks like he went to his parents for approval and obviously mom would prefer him being closer.
That and leaving it to the last minute strikes me as kind of an immature handling of this whole thing.

I don't think it was entirely mom.
Wife is expecting first kid, w no family in Calgary. My wife did the same when we move to Regina. I'd be lying if I told you she wasn't anxious and nervous about the lack of help she'd have compared to living here.
