On one hand its good to honour your family and consider them, but on the other Gross said it was a family decision, and at 29 you can't have mom influencing your decisions any more. He's an adult and has the ability to make his own decisions and it looks like he went to his parents for approval and obviously mom would prefer him being closer.
That and leaving it to the last minute strikes me as kind of an immature handling of this whole thing.

I don't think it's immature at all - and I don't think it was his mom and dad driving this decision. The rumor was his wife is pregnant and that changed the considerations.
A hockey player is on the road most of the year. Where do you think you'd rather have your wife and baby? Close to home with family as a support system or in Calgary where the only real support system is likely the other players and their spouses.
I have an 18 month old and I'm lucky enough to have my parents near by and my in-laws just moved from Ontario when she was 6 months because they wanted to be closer to their grandchildren.
And it has been amazing to have that support system around, especially for my wife.
He left upwards of $14M dollars on the table to do what's best for his family - if anything that is a very mature decision. I would have liked if he would have just made this clear from the minute the season ended but I think it was truly a tough decision for him, probably one he's still questioning today.
