On one hand its good to honour your family and consider them, but on the other Gross said it was a family decision, and at 29 you can't have mom influencing your decisions any more. He's an adult and has the ability to make his own decisions and it looks like he went to his parents for approval and obviously mom would prefer him being closer.

That and leaving it to the last minute strikes me as kind of an immature handling of this whole thing.
I think family decision means being somewhere close to family support for your wife and kids when you are on the road. I also think it means being home more often to actually see your kids. On the East Coast you can be home the night of probably 10-15 of your road games (depending on schedule). Overall in the season you probably see your kids an extra 20 days or so. Your wife has family support down the road to help with the kids.

Being someone with two your kids and who had a job that had me on the road often and living 3000km away from family support, I totally understand the value of raising your family near the rest of your family. I doubt it was because his mom made the decision for him.
