How do you know the consensus opinion of the hockey world? I would have had it at 50/50, and losing a coin toss doesn't mean you didn't have a 50% to win it when it was flipped.
My guess is they were fully informed on the risks, and decided to keep the player and not trade him for value they didn't think was right.

I think he is a yes man on the things that matter. That buys him a lot of rope, rope he uses to skate by signings like Brouwer and Neal, along with the Hamonic trade. On a lot of teams, those two signings and trade, coupled with a decade of mediocrity would kill a GM’s career. It does not seem to affect BT, because I think he is an expert at knowing what issues he has to manage up.
