Either you don't replace Gaudreau in an capacity, or you don't replace Gaudreau in any capacity but at least have time to formulate a Plan B.
It seems pretty obvious the world was offered to Gaudreau, and I can imagine that was made pretty clear up front given his franchise player status on the team. If that didn't seal the deal early on, then you best find another option, not wait until verbal hemming and hawing becomes a "no".
Gaudreau could have been more clear about his intentions, but I think Brad should have made his best offer a week ago and said to Gaudreau taht's as good as it gets. Waiting until the last minute is a mistake on both their ends.
