Teams can tamper with a pending UFA whether his existing team is negotiating with him or not. If he had simply said he wasn't re-signing, all the negotiations could have been out in the open and he would have got all the leverage he needed from that.
You honestly think the biggest name to hit UFA in years hasn't got leverage already? You sound like the guy who added a lawnmower engine to his Ferrari to help it go faster.
