What risk? You're assuming that he may have signed last off-season, after an awful year in Calgary. Doesn't make much sense. This year was fantastic for him in Calgary. What changed in the last year to suddenly make him want to go home? If he doesn't sign this year, it was always his plan to go back IMO.
If Calgary had traded Gaudreau last off-season, it would have been a sell-low scenario, as he was coming off two bad seasons. Likely late 1st and a couple okay prospects. Instead, the Flames won a division and were considered contenders. Didn't work out, but it is what it is and the Flames finished better than 24 other teams in the league.
