In my opinion this has been their plan. A couple years ago Toews and Kane said they want to remain in Chicago for life. Current management have decided the want to rebuild but Toews and Kane aren't happy with that and expressed their desires for the team to keep competitive. So the team is just forcing their hands. Want to stay here? Well, you're going to get to play with crap.
