Gaudreau was not "underpaid" on his last deal. He signed for very close to market value for a player of his calibre and with the results he had collected. One might say he put performed his deal, but that has mostly to do with cap inflation than anything else.

Locking in a few sponsorships can still easily net a player $4-5M annually. That's reserved for the tier 1 NHL players, and falls off pretty fast if you're not Crosby, MacKinnon, McDavid, etc. Not NBA/NFL worthy but not nothing, either.
And yes, long term deals are a two-way street, especially pre UFA years, and no one forces the player to sign it. But yes, vs. market, the last few years Johnny outperformed that contract without question.
