I was thinking more of a virus that killed off a majority of people but left enough alive to restart civilization, kinda like the new Planet of the Apes trilogy without the ubersmart monkeys. Give the planet time to heal and humans go back to smaller collectives but with modern technology, so by the time we're back to planet affecting numbers hopefully we're smarter about it
