When you have the best line in hockey, you do what you have to keep it together. We spend enough on the middle six as is - we don't need to dilute the top end of the roster. That will absolutely not result in more success, especially when our middle of the roster is already failing (Monahan) and is likely to falter more as time moves on (Backlund).

Invest in the top talent, and then acquire great value players in trades and free agency like how Tampa and Colorado do it. Paying free agency rates for middle six players just isn't how you build a winner because it comes at the expense of what really drives your team (the top end of your roster).
I think this gets trotted out too frequently. They had a fantastic season, but head to head against our arch rival and we saw just how well they stack up. I would say it’s a top 10 line in the league, but head to head against McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, Kucherov, I have a hard time saying our line is even on the same level let alone better.

I say this because they’re about to get best line in hockey money, should they stick around these parts.
