I watched them a few games last year and can't really agree. There is so much wrong with them, not just goaltending although it would help. It's not easy to finish where they did in the standings. Hughes and Hichier are in that second tier of centers for me, Hughes has the upside to be in the first but isn't there yet, he is very much an incomplete player at this point. Hamilton is a stud but heir defense as a whole is also below average and the extra pieces you listed are something that every team has. Mercer does look good though.
Now Gaudreau would make them a playoff team if they get good goaltending but how many good goalies are out there? I'm not sure anyone available would look good behind that defense and if they did I still don't see them close to contending, playoff bubble team at best.
