Playing 2 years in the AHL is very common. I suspect he gets a taste of NHL action this year, and depending on how it goes he potentially is the backup the season after.
There is zero evidence that they are harming his development. Rushing him to the NHL would potentially do that though.
He's an undersized guy coming off his first year pro. There is no rush here.
