Basically, if Lucic retires before the start of the regular season, the $3 million he has already been paid for 2022-23 would still count against the Flames' cap for the year. The only way to make his entire cap hit go away is to trade him.

I’m not sure that’s the case either but I’d have to triple check.
All articles and discussion I’ve seen is that the entire hit would go away if he retires.
