I think part of it is that Ovechkin was a Putin promoter even before the full scale invasion. Now that many innocent people have been murdered, his previous Putin support stands out and isn't a good look.
I am not saying that the dangers of speaking out are not real, but I think it is fair that people want to know his feelings now. It's hard to root for someone if you think they support a ruthless dictator.
