While we as viewers may know that Eddie distracting the bats was irrelevant; Eddie didnt know that. One thing about Stranger Things is that the characters make decisions based on the info they have, regardless if it's correct or not.

Reminds me of the Big Giant Head episode of Rick and Morty where the cult is worshiping the heads, and to them it all makes sense and seems to jive, they couldn't be further from the truth.

I only say this to say, remember the characters don't know everything we do.

I agree except this is Stranger Things not something like Game of Thrones. Fanfare makes Stranger Things what it is. I mean we got Eddie playing Metallica in the most metal concert of all time. So like why not do this:

Have the bats get in and actually putting Dustin in danger of death and have Eddie save him instead of just buying more time that he doesn't even know if it's needed. We get everything the same for purposes of the plot. Eddie dying a heroes death, Dustin upset that he died a hero but regarded as a killer, and viewers like myself left more satisfied with his heroic sacrifice that they were obviously going for.
