I suspect they think a lot more about coaching/mgmt/ownership than we do as fans.
Or maybe he doesn't think about it too much and just has a very general sense that Calgary = slightly better short-term vs. most other teams who look slightly better long-term.

I think we forget that hockey players generally are not as educated as a lot of fans, including about the league. They are also so close to the action they can miss the forest for the trees. I think that, absent some sort of outside info like you mention, they think “that team has a bunch of great players”. And they probably tend to think more highly of established players than good prospects. I doubt they follow minors and college hockey much, except their former teams.
