I'm genuinely curious how players in Johnny's situation go about assessing team trajectories. Is he sitting by the pool scrolling through capfriendly and hockey-reference and making pro/con lists for each potential team? Maybe a family member or someone at his agency prepares a 1-pager on each team? He'd also have personal experiences that might influence his thinking - a certain Devil had a standout game against the Flames or a certain Flyer stunk it up.

I suspect they think a lot more about coaching/mgmt/ownership than we do as fans.

Or maybe he doesn't think about it too much and just has a very general sense that Calgary = slightly better short-term vs. most other teams who look slightly better long-term.
