I recently travelled to Colombia.

I had an issue with an overnight flight to Bogota from Toronto that was delayed by more than 3 hours due to "mechanical" issues... but according to some staff I overheard they had known about this issue more than 12 hours before the flight. Somewhere communication fell through and they were not able to locate an aircraft until much later in the evening, despite them having adequate ground staff and their own hangar.

It was a mess in general (and I had some delays in security in Pearson on the way back), but I would just advise you to plan ahead and give yourself extra time at the airport. If you really want to still travel abroad, I wouldn't be scared off doing it. Just make sure you're prepared for any circumstance. Might help to purchase some insurance as well to cover baggage losses, cancelled flights, etc.
