My point is that he's worth $12m a year over the next three or four years. His production is very likely to fall off a cliff once he hits 33, as it does for almost every other player. Giving him an eight year deal for eighty plus million dollars is likely the only way he stays in Calgary. Do we really want have a ten million dollar cap hit for a 36 year old player?

Production of elite players doesn't follow the same trajectory, many produce very well still at 35+.
