Normally signing rights for a player are a third round pick.
But what would the Flyers be willing to give up for both the signing rights to Gaudreau and for the Flames taking Van Riemsdyk and his $7M contract off their hands?
Unfortunately the Flyers don't have a second round pick.
But would they be dumb enough to trade to trade their first overall pick?
In a weak to average year for high end talent.
Flames - Van Riemsdyk ($7M cap one year) and 2022 first round pick #5 overall
Flyers - Signing rights to Gaudreau, cap space ($7M), and Flames 2022 second round pick #58 overall

No, they would not be that dumb. JVR would probably garner at least a 3rd rd pick on the trade market; ergo JVR alone would be sufficient value for Johnny's rights (probably including the 8th year).
While JVR would be a decent stopgap and probably net a better return at TDL, the Flames still couldn't really afford him + Matty + Mangi (without dumping Lucic or running every other empty slot at league min.).
