I think it is different with home grown talent like Gaudreau and Tkachuk. The flames know these guys from 18 and have helped them get to where they are. Keep the stars you draft and develop. If Johnny walks and Chucky wants too much money I think they trade Chucky for a more futures based package then they re-sign Mangiapane long term and fill out the roster. Flexibility comes back the following summer with Lucic and Monahan expiring. If they lose both they may take a run at Forsberg but if one stays I think they hold off
In short I think they move heaven and earth to sign their guys but they won’t do it to keep one and try and sign another from a different team.
