I think he's evaluating his options to see what the best fit will be for him and his family. He might sacrifice and sign an $75-80 million contract if he feels the situation better suits him compared to Calgary, i.e.: playing in the East, or playing in a warm climate etc.
Therefore I predict he waits for UFA and tests the waters. He might find Calgary is the best fit for him and stays.

Cro, this isn't directed at you...just in general
Just read the bolded part. Professional athletes and their families for the most part are set for life. People are talking like if he doesn't maximize this contract, he'll be pumping gass in a few years. The poor guy may have to "make a sacrifice" and sign for $75-80 milion. If you could pick almost anywhere you want to live and work and raise a family and make 80 million or be stuck in one place that may not be your first choice for 8 years to make an extra 8 million or whatever it'll work out to. I get it, $8 million is a lot of money but for someone who will still be making around 80 million and has already made around 40 million to date, that 8 million isn't that important. Plus if he signs for 7 years in one place, he can still sign an 8th year later on...it likely won't be for the 8ish he isn't making now but it'll still be for something.
The guy will pick where he wants to play, location will mean everything. Plain and simple. He isn't poor. He has a lot of money. The one extra year or the 8 or 9 more million additional dollars on the career earnings won't matter. These elite guys want to make as much as they can but realistically the money doesn't matter too much. And if you think he is going to be hurting for that extra money, he must be doing something real dumb with his money and should probably move close to his parents so they can take care of him.
