Gaudreau is one of the best players the Flames ever had. If he walks and the Flames get nothing back, the blame has to fall on someone. Full stop.
Sure, it's his choice but there should have been a line in the sand. You can't afford to lose players like that for nothing, and this isn't hindsight, it's asset management. Even letting it get to this point is bad because they now have to either give him a huge contract or get nothing for him. If they give him a huge contract, they can't afford to improve the team much (and they weren't good enough already). If he walks and they get no return, they won't be able to replace his production (and again, they weren't good enough).
They should have had a contact agreed on by last year's draft, if he wasn't willing to sign then(and announced it as soon as free agency hit) they should have traded him.
