It doesn't even necessarily have to be a bad salary going the other way, but could simply be a player who is becoming redundant on the new team and would patch the hole left by the exiting player.
When Flames got Bouw it was for a 3rd + Leopold's UFA rights, who FLA ended up signing (on/after July 1 IIRC), as he helped fill that gap.
An example with NJD might be Tatar - undersized offensive winger with a fair 1x4.5M left; wouldn't fit as well on NJD if they added Johnny, but the expiring term might make him a preferable stopgap (compared to giving more term to a UFA) for a team in transition, with potential to flip at TDL.
