I always thought that too. It was always Vader's purpose to give Luke the assist against the emperor. That was the only way to bring balance to the force, and everything had to happen the way it did.
Without Luke's emotional connection to Vader, and seeing how the dark side destroyed his own father, maybe Luke gets seduced by the dark side. And no way Luke defeats Palpatine without Vader's help.
