But at his core, he still loved him and couldn't bring himself to kill him, he knew at that point he couldn't save him either. He also decided to leave Anakin's faith in the hands of the Force.
I think that Obi-Wan was frightened, Anakin should have been dead, he's lost multiple limbs, he had burned and only Anakin's peerless command of the Force kept him alive. There had to be a reason for that.
Obi-Wan believed that Anakin had died on Mustafar. At the end of the book Dark Lord, Obi-Wan was in a bar in Tatooine, when he saw a news report of Vader slaughtering and enslaving Wookies. He prepared to go and gather Luke and go get Leia and go deeper into hiding when he heard the voice of Qui-gon.
Qui-gon told Obi that there was still a spark of the good man that was Anakin buried deep in Vader, and Vader would never step foot on Tatooine because it would cause him pain and might awaken that conflict inside of him.

I know you like the books. But they don’t make the movies better for people who don’t read them.
Also, I’m just getting at the whole series could have started in a different way and both what happened in ROTS and this could have happened in a proper prequel trilogy. One that actually had a little Vader in it. Some blend of the finale season of Clone Wars and this show.
