10% sales tax, homes here are among the most expensive in the US, and child care is $2100-2500 a month.
Health insurance is costly, even with employer subsidy.
I think the whole 'US is cheaper' is a canard. It's arguably cheaper if you're middle class and live in rural Nebraska (and don't get sick), or if you're ultra-rich (very favourable tax laws for high net worth individuals). For the average family, it's definitely not cheaper if you live in the kind of city that has an NHL hockey team. All in all, if you're making less than 100K, you're way better off financially if you live in Canada.
Admittedly for players like Johnny, the cost of living is probably immaterial and not a meaningful draw one way or another.
