Probably not, as it's likely that ownership signed off on, or at least were made very much aware of the risk of, keeping an unsigned Johnny for the year.
Teams lose UFA's all the time. They save lots of cap, so the fallout is usually not nearly as bad as expected. The Islanders are the best example of this.
