I really don't think $1MM in cap space per year should be the defining legacy over whether or not to just get this done or not.
Does this contract get done lickety split at $10.5MM/year over 8 years? I think so.
Does it get done at $9.5MM/year? No, because it's worth $8MM to Gaudreau, who will inevitably test free agency, obviously. Any of us would too if the choice was go make $8MM more or not.
Does the $1MM in cap space matter? Yes. But what's more important, trying to make the rest of the cap space problem work and having a chance at playoffs again / competitive team again with Sutter at the helm, or losing it all because you were trying to thread the needle being cute and lost Gaudreau over $1MM in cap space.
Now is not the time to get all strong arm on the contract. The decision to try and roll with Gaudreau as our face of the franchise was made at the deadline a few months ago, not now. To me, this isn't that complicated and Treliving REALLY needs to get this done. If he doesn't personally I think he should be fired. And he should be willing to pony up here to keep Gaudreau. He was legitimately one of the best forwards in the NHL this year.
