I think that would be a mistake as well. Yes, Gaudreau had a massive year, and played the best hockey he has played in his life. Is that sustainable, especially over the next eight years? I don't think so. You may get value out of that contract for the first three years, if everything goes like it did this past season, but what about the last five? I don't see Gaudreau being a player that scores 100 points a season for the next eight years. He falls beneath that level and you're in big trouble with a huge cap hit. I don't mind paying him eight figures for the first couple of years, but by the end of the contract he has to be down to a $6-7M player. Paying a 35 year old $10M+ a season is a recipe for disaster IMO.
