From the same conversations, press from the area, Tkachuk was the pipe dream. The best player that would fit the needs of the team to a tee. He was the only player that the Devils would give up the following assets... #2 plus a significant player not named Holtz, Smith or Hughes (possibly Mercer).
That leaves the conversation to Sharangrovich, Graves, Boqvist, and not coming from Calgary fans or media.
I'm not advocating the trade of Tkachuk, but the off-season conversation of picking up Graves (a top 4 LD) and what to do with the logjam there (more trades!) as well as arguing about the pros and cons of drafting Cooley or Slafkovsky, would be really fun as a fan.

I think if you are moving Tkachuk it is because you think Cooley can be a #1 centre. That's why it makes sense. Trading Tkachuk for a winger prospect that is highly unlikely to be as good as Tkachuk makes no sense.
But a slightly less good centre is more valuable than a better winger.
Build up the middle. #1 centres are generally drafted high. That's why you make this deal.
