It has been talked a lot about. Taxes make a difference, but not as significant as many suggest. Athletes get taxed based on their residence. Meaning that where ever JG's legal home is is his tax rate for every game the Flames play on the road. It is only the games that played in canada he would have to play AB taxes.
Secondly, Atheletes are able to effectively defer lots of their income until after retirement. I cant remember what they're called.
TLDR/ taxes impact how much money players take home based on location, but not as much as you would imagine.
