I believe the reasoning goes:
"Is it a basic human right to defend one's life by any means necessary?" It's been long established in our legal system that you can. So if the answer to that is yes, why is it not a right to defend yourself with a firearm, especially if your attacker has one and is willing to use it against you?
Gun rights are human rights predominantly because self-defense is embedded in your right to live. You have a right to self-defense and every reasonable means to enforce that right.
