The Scorpion was simply stating that he doesn't believe Zadorov was worth $2.5mil, he made no mention of what the NHL at large was willing to pay on his UFA contract coming up.
He was simply suggesting that Zadorov played really great in his role for the Flames this year...as a sheltered, third pairing D-man, and he doesn't believe that was worth more than $2.5mil.
I agree in a sense. Stats are going to look really good when you play sheltered minutes and Sutter was brilliant in how he used Gudbranson and Zadorov this year to maximize their size against opponents without letting then get caved in via deployment. But I tend to agree that you don't want to go signing a player like him to $3+AAV deal when we're already likely losing an important forward or two to the cap.

Yeah I don’t disagree at all. Zadorov was this team’s 6th defenseman and he was healthy scratched at times. Generally speaking, a skater making close to $4M shouldn’t be getting healthy scratched.
Some other team might be interested in paying a premium for Zadorov’s services, but the Flames being in the situation that they’re in, certainly shouldn’t be. All things being equal, I’d rather have Gudbranson anyway. Comparable player, right shot, less erratic, no pizzas right up the middle.
