It basically is tampering, as my next paragraph alluded to.
Just like us fans know, at UFA time for top tier players, agents GMs player etc at that level know they are getting between 7-8 years from someone.
I am sure offers have been put back and forth over the last year or so with the Flames and JG’s camp. And other teams know what those numbers are, (just as Calgary would know what they are on FA’s they may be looking at) via the agent or other unofficial sources, but it happens league wide so it’s not something nefarious.
So teams interested and in the running these last months know that their offer is close to the Flames offer, and JG and his agent know that too, which is why they are in the running.
Sure, could one team that’s interested offer $1m more or some larger NMC assurance? Or play in a state with less taxation and thus more take home income? Sure, but I think most teams are in the ballpark for $ and term, so it really does come down to personal preference for JG and his family, as to where he wants to live and play the next 7 or 8 years of his life as opposed to who may offer an extra $500k a year at the last minute.
