Hamonic was the biggest blunder. Massive overpay for an incredibly mediocre player. Flames could have Noah Dobson plus had a lot more flexibility in making trades having those seconds back. This deal was supposed to turn the wildcard, first round swept team into contention. Flames would miss in year 1, lose in the first round in year 2, and Hamonic would bail on the team in year 3 not playing in the bubble. The Flames likely could have taken a more serious run at O’Rielly or Dubois, or other deals had they not spent a top pairing trade price on a bottom pairing Dman. Both Brodie and Hanifin benefited greatly when they were given new partners after playing with Hamonic.
I will say for a replacement deal the failed Kadri trade would have been nice. Kadri would have been a help in the playoff runs in 20, and 22. Having Kadri would have also made it easier to pull off one of the rumored Monahan deals that didn’t happen before his value tanked.
