Usually it was a show that relied on visual gags and zingers. But this episode literally demanded that outside of dropping the cake in the hyperdrive, that it was serious in nature.

The scene between Isaac and Charlie, really hit you in the heart, and you don't blame her for her anger at all and her hate.

But the most brilliant scene was when Seth literally made fun of Star Trek in his appeal to Charlie. Because in Star Trek you get the 10 second its the right thing to do, or show the galaxy that humans aren't dirtbag we're different speeches, and the person gets with the program.

With this one, Charlie stood her ground, she couldn't get buy her feelings even when Ed stated that her monopolizing her grief and hate was getting tiring.

Even when she did save Isaac you could see that she had a sense of self loathing.

The other thing is we don't get beaten over the head with exposition. We had the half attended funeral scene, and Ed didn't spend 10 minutes after the funeral musing about the failures of humanities being shown in each and every seat. In a lot of ways, the Orville shows a lot of respect for the brains of the viewers, they beat us over the head with stuff. .
