We can now deduce that by the time ANH takes place, only 9-10 years has passed since Vader and Obi-Wan last saw each other? "I sense something, a presence I have not felt in... a least a few years"??

they did it this way because clearly everyone's been clamouring for it and they're trying to win back the fan base as quickly as possible by stuffing series with "Hell Yeah" moments, regardless of fit into established storylines. as long as they keep lingering on this early Empire period, it's just not that easy to make it seamless.
I feel the same way about Vader's Rogue One appearance though I admit I'm on an island with that. I just thought that having the crowd cheer and holler as he's slaughtering good guys was too weird and meant that Vader fan worship had transcended the story of a pretty despicable villain. also it made him look like a dumbass show-off because he could have prevented the passing of the Death Star plans at any time with a simple force pull, but instead he wanted to slowly amble through the rebels like an old timey horror movie monster. and then for all that to lead into ANH opening with Leia claiming to be on a senate diplomatic mission to Alderaan...well that just doesn't make sense anymore.
