There have been a lot of CG-fests. Usually takes me right out of the movie. Makes it way less ..visceral? in those tense action sequences than what you get in TG where you can practically feel the Gs exerted on the actors.

Well okay that's a very specific thing you're looking for
As an example, for me the MCU movies have recently moved to a direction that makes for a much better cinematic experience. More interesting visuals, better soundtracks (MoM, No Way Home), more attention paid to "how does this work in a theater".
Then there's just cinematic dramas, "First Man" for example, great cinema experience, probably not much in a living room.
Then there's movies like Dune which is barely worth watching outside a cinema, but quite impressive in a theater. Mood pieces, like a lot of A24 movies too.
...Of course I don't really get the whole "tension" thing in action scenes, I mostly look for other things. Action scenes almost never have what I'd call "tension", 99% of the time you have a fairly accurate idea of where the scene will go and the "how" is just a bunch of stunts that have no relevance to anything that happens right before or after.
