The problem is the Flames have no 1st pair and use Andersson and Hanifin as such. All the contenders have better first pairs.

First pairing defensemen don't grow on trees. You have to draft them early most of the time which requires being bad (not likely going to happen in the immediate future) or you overpay in free agency to get their declining years. I'm not so sure the team is any better overpaying and overcommitting to a guy like Pietrangelo (who's best days look behind him) than they are with a bunch of 2nd pairing defensemen playing on affordable contracts.
