Yes, they were huge issues. Coaching was an issue. The top line was an issue.
They play McDavid, they get scared. You could tell even in Game 1, they have no idea what to do when this guy is bearing down on them. They grip their sticks too tight and make stupid mistakes all over the ice that they just don’t make against other teams.
I think they get this way because they know if Johnny isn’t feeling it that night, they can’t outscore the Oilers. Tkachuk isn’t going to take the game over. Lindholm isn’t.
Like, don’t get me wrong, they’re extremely high quality players. But you’ve never seen either of them take a game over even once the way Gaudreau does on a regular basis.
We need another player who can take a game over. There’s no getting around it. If Calgary had actually won a Stanley Cup this year, they’d be the team with the least high end talent to do it in the cap era. Toss up between them and the 2006 Hurricanes, God’s Team.
