If they’d scored more than enough goals, they wouldn’t have lost in 5.
They don’t have the horses up front to trade chances with Edmonton, Colorado or Tampa, and if you can’t do that, you have no business calling yourself a contender.
Add a star player who can create without Johnny, then you can make sure one of Backlund or Lindholm is on the ice at all times in a shutdown capacity, against the opposing superstar who usually dummies us - McDavid, MacKinnon, it’s a type - and still have someone who’s a reliable threat to score.
Backlund needs to be the 3. Lindholm can be the guy who plays with Johnny, but the #2C should arguably (or inarguably, if possible) be better.
The complete mishandling of Bennett and the complete stalling of Monahan’s career have set this group so far back. Two top-6 picks and neither being key contributors for one reason or another is simply devastating.
