It doesn't say anything about what his equivalent added value to the deal though. They figured they had a chance to sign him, but how much value do you put on a "chance"? The Rangers on the other hand knew they could sign him and were likely willing to pay a lot more for that chance instead of having to wait.
If the Flames had never drafted Fox I doubt this deal still doesn't get done. Carolina insisted on adding him because we had him and they knew they could leverage that due to him not wanting to sign in Calgary.
