The goalies were bad, and will be better. So we can put that aside and move on. However, there were still some things to be discerned from this game:

1) PK. It is pretty much universally agreed that if the Oilers are going to have a chance in this series, they need their PP to carry them. The Flames' PK was dominant in the Dallas series, but the Oilers' PP was also dominant against the Kings. So which team could step up? The Flames' PK absolutely destroyed the PP. Just completely shut them down. In 4 PPs, the Oilers managed controlled possession for a total of maybe 30 seconds. Tops. If the PK can keep playing like that, it will be a short series.

2) 5 on 5. It is also agreed that the Flames are going to be the better team 5 on 5, the question is by how much? Yes, the Oilers scored 6 even strength goals. But that was due to a tough night from Markstrom. Overall, the Flames dominated the 5 on 5 play. Shots were 48-28 and there was probably some game effect in that, as the Flames led for about 58 of the 60 minutes. The level of dominance was pretty encouraging.

3) Game 1. I was worried about last night's game because with game 1, three are nerves, there is usually some bizarreness (and we definitely saw that), and there are often a ton of penalties called. So I thought game 1 might be there for the taking for the Oilers. Nope.

4) Nurse. Zero points, 1 shot, -3. LOL

5) Flames D, without Tanev. They definitely struggled at times. Zadorov lost McDavid a couple times. Andersson and Hanifin had a couple shifts they would like back. But overall, the Flames' D was a hell of a lot better than the Oiler D.

6) How big of a factor would Kassian be? Did he play? Never noticed, until the end of the game when he embarrassed himself.

7) Johnny and the top line. Dominant in the first. Tkachuk had his best game of the playoffs.

Overall: ignoring the goaltending on both sides, the Flames executed their plan a lot better than the Oilers did. And deserved to win.

I expect game 2 to be a completely different kind of game, with both teams trying to be better defensively.
