Alright, I got a bee in my bonnet about this. I decided to compare the Oilers to the Flames in offence since the lockout.



(Asterisks indicate shortened seasons due to COVID or lockout)

Some notes:
  • Since the lockout, the Flames have averaged 225 GF/yr with an average league rank of 15.8. The Oilers average 218 GF/yr, with an average league rank of 17.9.
  • Since the lockout, the Flames have scored 116 more goals than the Oilers.
  • Since the lockout, the Flames have a total goal differential of +85.
  • Since the lockout, the Oilers have a total goal differential of -415.
  • In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have a total goal differential of -3.
  • In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have finished in the top 10 of league scoring 3 times, and never higher than 7th.
  • In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have outscored the
  • Flames four times, and the Flames have outscored the Oilers 3 times.
  • In the seven years of the "McDavid era", the Oilers have outscored the Flames by … whoops, nope, the Flames have outscored the Oilers by 9 goals.
  • 2005-06 is the year where the Oilers most outscored the Flames, but actually had a worse goal differential. The Flames won the division despite being 28th in league scoring.
  • In 09-10, the Oilers outscored the Flames but allowed 74 more goals. The Oilers finished with 62 points, the Flames 90.
